LONDON ROAD CEMETERY GODMANCHESTER
RESTORATION TO LAWNED STATUS

In April 2002 the Godmanchester Town Council will assume responsibility for the administration of the Town’s cemetery on London Road. The cemetery was designated a “Lawn Cemetery” in 1973, which means that “all graves have to have flat grassed surfaces”. Moreover, “no flowers or shrubs may be planted on or around the grave other than in a receptacle approved by the Council as part of a permanent memorial”. However, over the years there have been several changes to the structure of local government and, regrettably, the rules were not applied consistently or correctly. As a result, several grave-spaces have been set with flowerbeds or decorated with a variety of personal objects.

The Town Council has already written to the last known address of the next-of-kin for each of the graves that will need to be restored to lawned status; the work will take place in 2002. However, it is possible that not everyone has received the information and the Council is concerned that each person affected should be sent the documents explaining what is to be done and why it is necessary.

If, therefore, you believe that you should have been informed about the restoration please contact The Town Clerk,
Godmanchester Town Council, 1 Post Street, Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire, PE29 2NB or via e-mail
