Neighbourhood Watch

Members of Neighbourhood Watch receive direct information on crimes and incidents in Godmanchester from the Police, allowing them to be aware of specific current issues. This information is provided by telephone or e-mail to the co-ordinator and deputy co-ordinator, to pass on to the members. Each scheme is about 11 homes, and the group will have a co-ordinator and a deputy co-ordinator. They receive phone (voicemail) or e-mail messages they then pass these down to the people in their group. These come from the Police Station and are usually giving out information of crimes and incidents that are happening in Godmanchester.

These two roles are a key part of an effective Scheme. Their role would include maintaining the scheme and acting as a link between the scheme, other co-ordinators and the local police. These positions usually take about 1-2 hours a month according to the criminal activities.

As members you are also expected to keep an eye out for your elderly neighbours who are at risk of bogus callers. Neighbourhood Watch members also get a home insurance discount when you present them with the reference number of your watch.

If you see someone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood contact the police. It does not matter how small you think the incident is you must contact the police every time, they are then able to put the information together like a jigsaw, and this can sometimes end in arrests. Always ask for an incident number so that the data can be collated and acted upon by our local Officers.

We are lucky to now have two Police Community Safety Officers, they can be seen riding around the Town on bicycles in the summer months,so if you see them stop them, and say hello, get to know them. They are here to help us, the main part of their job is dealing with anti social behaviour of all descriptions and this involves building relations with all members of our community (see page 52).

A few years ago I joined the Crime Prevention Panel this suddenly developed into me being the overall co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Watch in Godmanchester. The Neighbourhood Watch is simply being a good and considerate neighbour. It is something you do for your fellow neighbours in your immediate area.

Please give setting up a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in your road a thought. If you want more information please contact me on:
