Getting Involved - One Year On The Bond's views (From 1997)
Max Cashback

This article was written to give a good idea of the enjoyment to be gained from the Godmanchester Community Association. Why not drop us a line and come along to the next meeting - it is good fun!

Whether you have just moved to Godmanchester or now find you have a few hours available per year - what does it mean to become involved in the Community Association?

Our first experience was attending the February 1996 AGM following some gentle 'arm twisting' in The Exhibition. We had only moved here in October 1994 and our initial awareness was through a copy of 'The Bridge' left by the previous owners alongside manuals for the gas boiler and the like! We had been to the Fireworks in 1994 and the Gala Day and Fireworks in 1995, but the Association was still a 'faceless' entity. The arm twisting was accompanied by the comment that "I'm sure you'll enjoy it". Added to this was the chance to meet people locally and the possibility of getting involved in our chosen abode following many years of frequent moving and weekend commuting.

The reality is that the Association is a varied lot with a great spirit, who are very open to new ideas, skills and volunteers to help out within your constraints of available time. Whilst it is essential to have a cadre of stalwarts providing continuity, there is a positive welcome for new members and new ideas.

The next meeting requested offers of support for the various activities, my wife and I found ourselves raising our hands to join the team compiling The Bridge - after all it seemed straight forward enough. That first year we were tasked with pulling together the essential support from our community based businesses, and preparing some of the, what we hope are interesting, items. These are combined with the submissions from the school children to embrace the July events organised by The Community Association and The Comrades Club. Apparently, a quiz type item has usually been included - in hind sight my offer to prepare a crossword was reckless and I later realised why there were knowing smiles at my offer as I struggled to fit in the final few street names in the grid!

Another new Member Mike Westcott-Rudd had suggested a GMC Hash in 1996 and the success has led to another event this year. Other new Members volunteered to take on specific roles alongside long-standing members for the Fireworks Night, and of course, Gala Day itself is a major effort requiring 'hands-on' support from everyone. This year Brian Marsh joined us and is organising the first Duck Race, whilst we hope to put together a Pubs Game Night at The Exhibition.

At the time of writing, we are now nearing the deadlines for top copy for the 1997 issue of The Bridge, whilst those organising the specific events during Gala Week & Gala Day are confirming final details. Hopefully you will enjoy this issue and, of course, the events arranged by your neighbours. Why not have a chat to anyone already involved or catch one of us on Gala Day or at a Gala Week event? The Association is a bit of fun and of course, puts something back, not least monies for the local charities.

Give us your feedback and suggestions for 1998. Hope to see you at the next meeting.
