Skate Park Appeal - how it came about in 2000

Max Cashback

While out skating with my friends I realised that Godmanchester had no facilities for rollerbladers so I decided to do something about it. In the spring of 1998 I wrote to the mayor, Mrs Godley, to voice my concerns about the dangers we, and pedestrians, face when we skate on the pavements. I was then put in contact with Councillor Stephen Spencer of the Recreation and Amenity Working Party. A public meeting for those interested in the scheme was held and a skate park committee was formed.

Having been given a budget by the Town and District Councils, the committee worked together to plan what would go into the park. We soon found that the budget would not stretch to what we had planned, and after a plea for further funds in a Hunts Post article on the park, and more discussions with the Councils we were given extra money and the park looks as though it might go ahead. However, at the time of writing, (April) we still need to find some sponsors willing to donate some money to this project.

If we can raise some money ourselves through sponsorship, fund raising etc the project is more likely to succeed.

If you have any ideas for fund raising, or would be able to help raise money, or are a local business willing to sponsor the skate park please contact The Town Council. As well as money we need lots of enthusiastic people willing to help.

Thank you.
Jennifer Rea.
