Mike Westcott Rudd provides the latest information on
the new Godmanchester sports facility.
Things have not, until recently progressed as quickly as we had hoped this time last year and senior football will not become a reality here until the 2001-2 season. However, the good news is that by the time you read this the sportsfield will have been host to Godmanchesters largest ever junior six a aside competition over the weekend of 2/3 June, with around 120 teams taking part. The land was transferred from Westbury Homes to Huntingdonshire District Council in February and the Trust hopes to become the landowners in the next few weeks once it is satisfied that all of the outstanding planning obligations requiring Westbury to provide the sportsfield and changing rooms have all been met. In anticipation of this, the Trust has just obtained planning permission for the erection of floodlights, which it already owns, kindly paid for by Hertfordshire Groundwork, who are responsible for allocating the charitable of Lafarge. We hope to have the lights up and working before the start of the next season. We are also in the early stages of a Football Association funding bid and the initial reaction has been favourable in principle. Finally the two remaining trustees would like to pay tribute to Stephen Spencer, who has now stepped down as a trustee, for his tireless hard work and initiative, and without whom the facility may well have remained a dream rather than a reality.
